Trust in the Lord

Proverbs 3:1-12

 

I. Act on the commandments of the Lord (1-2)

A. Admonition to act on the commandments of the Lord

 

Prov 3:1 My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments; NASB

 

Prov 3:1  My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, ESV

 

1 John 5:3 This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome NIV

 

        B. Advantage in acting on the commandments of the Lord

 

Ex 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. NIV

 

Eph 6:2 "Honor your father and mother"-which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." NIV

 

Prov 3:2 For length of days and years of life, And peace they will add to you.  NASB

 

II. Advance love and faithfulness (3-4)

        A. Admonition to advance love and faithfulness

 

        B. Advantage in advancing love and faithfulness

 

Prov 22:1 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. NIV

 

III. Acknowledge the Lord through trust (5-6)

        A. Admonition to acknowledge the Lord through trust

 

 

        B. Advantage in acknowledging the Lord through trust

 

IV. Accept teaching through fear of the Lord (7-8)

        A. Admonition to accept teaching through the Lord in fear

 

Prov 26:12 Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.  NIV

 

Isa 5:21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.  NIV

 

Rom 12:3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. NIV

 

        B. Advantage in accepting the teaching through the fear Lord

 

V. Assign your wealth to the Lord (9-10)

        A. Admonition to assign your wealth to the Lord

 

        B. Advantage in assigning your wealth to God

 

VI. Apply what the Lord teaches you through discipline (11-12)

        A. Admonition to apply what the Lord teaches us through discipline

 

Heb 12:5 And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son." NIV

 

        B. Advantage in applying what the Lord teaches us through discipline

 

Heb 12:7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. NIV
